Dr. Bruce Northam - Clay Road Baptist Church
Jesus used the event we will examine in this sermon as a teaching opportunity. He set forth the principle of lowly service and asked His followers to be like Him, not like the world. In the earlier chapters of John, Jesus gave His ministry to the people of Galilee and Jerusalem. In chapters 13 and following Jesus turns from an unbelieving world to minister the Father’s love to His inner circle of disciples. He gives these lasts days of love and instruction in the upper room to those who had devotedly opened their hearts to Him and His revelation. Before the sustained discourse begins Jesus performs two significant actions. The first is the washing of the disciple’s feet. This humble service is poured out on His companions and friends. God loves the world but displays it in special ways on His close followers. He requests those who experience the fullness of His love to share it with others.
