Selfishness is a god in our society. Almost every ad says we deserve to be pampered and the “me-ism” of our society permeates every facet of our lives. Our relationships are damaged by it. We even approach God with an “a-la-carte” mentality because of it, taking the things we find easy and discarding anything that makes us feel uncomfortable. Costly Counterfeit gods and idols are broken cisterns, but Jesus is the wellspring of life. The prophet Jeremiah spoke concerning the god of me, “…they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” (2:13) When we turn to costly counterfeits, it is like digging our own broken cisterns to drink out of, instead of drinking out of the fresh spring of living water flowing beside it.
